Why Is My Sink Draining Slowly?

A slow-draining sink is usually more than just an inconvenience. Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

A sink that drains slowly is one of the most common plumbing complaints and while it might seem
minor, it’s usually a sign that something is building up inside your pipework. Here are the most likely
causes.

  1. A build-up of grease, soap, or food debris In kitchen sinks, cooking fat and food particles stick to the inside of pipes over time, gradually narrowing the space water can flow through. In bathroom sinks, soap scum, toothpaste, and skincare products are common culprits.
  2. Hair and debris caught in the trap The U-bend (or P-trap) under your sink is designed to hold a small amount of water, but it also tends to catch hair and small debris, which can build up and slow drainage.
  3. A partial blockage further down the pipe Sometimes the clog isn’t right under the sink at all. Debris can settle further along the waste pipe, particularly where pipework changes direction or joins the main drain.
  4. Poor pipe slope or an ageing system In older properties, waste pipes may not have been installed with the correct fall (slope), which affects how efficiently water drains. Ageing pipework can also corrode or narrow internally over time.
  5. A blocked or blocked vent Plumbing systems rely on air venting to let water drain properly. If a vent pipe is blocked, you may notice gurgling sounds along with the slow drainage.

Simple things you can try first – Remove and clean the sink stopper or strainer of any visible debris. – Flush the drain with hot (not boiling, if you have plastic pipework) water. – Avoid pouring fat, oil, or coffee grounds down the sink, as these are major causes of build-up.

When to call a plumber If home remedies don’t clear it, or the problem keeps coming back, there’s likely a blockage further down the system that needs a proper drain clearance, using rodding or drain jetting equipment. Repeated slow draining can also be an early warning sign of a bigger blockage forming.

If your sink is still draining slowly after trying the basics, PipeGuard Plumbing can diagnose and clear the blockage properly, the first time.
